Košice with kids

Best accommodation in Košice for families

What to look for, what to do with children in Košice — and a two-bedroom apartment beside City Park.

The best family accommodation in Košice is usually a self-catering apartment with separate bedrooms, a kitchen and a washing machine, within walking distance of both the Old Town and a park. Hotel rooms work for a night or two, but with children a little space, somewhere to cook and a playground nearby make a far bigger difference than a central address.

What families should look for

  • Separate sleeping space. Two bedrooms (and ideally two bathrooms) mean parents are not tiptoeing around a napping toddler.
  • A real kitchen and a washing machine. Breakfasts, snacks and mid-trip laundry stop being a problem.
  • Blackout and temperature control. Košice summers can be hot; dark, air-conditioned bedrooms help with early nights and naps.
  • Baby and toddler kit on site. Ask whether a cot, high chair and safety gates are provided — it saves a lot of luggage.
  • Green space close by. A park within a few minutes’ walk is worth more than being right on the main square.
  • Parking or easy transport. If you are driving, check that parking is included: central on-street parking is in paid zones (see our parking guide).
  • Quiet at night. Streets on the edge of the centre tend to be calmer than the nightlife core.

Family things to do in Košice

City Park (Mestský park)

Right in the centre, with playgrounds for different ages, paths for scooters and buggies, and the free Playko multi-sport court. In winter the city runs an open-air ice rink here, with skate hire (in 2025/26 it opened on 6 December).

Rumanová summer swimming pool

The municipal outdoor pool at Rumanova 7 has its entrance from City Park, with a swimming pool and a separate non-swimmers’ pool. It is a summer venue: daily 9:00–19:00 in July and August, with shorter weekday hours in June and September; outside the season it is closed.

Steelpark

An interactive science playground in the Kasárne/Kulturpark complex (Kukučínova 2), spread over four floors of hands-on physics and chemistry exhibits — a good rainy-day option. Opening hours changed from September 2026, so check steelpark.sk before you go.

ZOO Košice

In Kavečany, on the wooded northern edge of the city, and open every day of the year: 9:00–19:00 from April to September, 9:00–17:00 in March and October, and 9:00–16:00 from November to February. A DinoPark can be added with a combined ticket from April to October, family tickets are available, and dogs are allowed for a small fee. City bus 29 runs from the railway station (Staničné námestie) to the zoo.

Botanical Garden (Pavol Jozef Šafárik University)

At 30 hectares with more than 4,000 plant species and cultivars, it is the largest botanical garden in Slovakia. The tropical greenhouses are a warm escape in winter: from 1 October to 30 April they open daily 9:00–15:00. Bus 19 runs from near the apartment straight to the Botanická záhrada stop.

Children’s Railway, Čermeľ

A narrow-gauge forest railway in the Čermeľ valley, running between Čermeľ and Alpinka stations; each way takes 20–25 minutes, and steam locomotives haul some weekend trains. It runs seasonally, roughly spring to autumn, so check the current timetable on detskazeleznica.sk.

Getting around with children

Central Košice is flat and easy with a buggy. City buses and trams (DPMK) cover the zoo, the Botanical Garden and Čermeľ; a basic DPMK ticket includes up to two pieces of luggage and one animal, and tickets cannot be bought from the driver — use a machine or app. For short hops, our tip from hosting is that a Bolt ride around the centre typically costs about €3.
