Košice guide

Where is the best area to stay in Košice?

An honest, neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood guide — and where our apartment fits.

For most visitors, the best area to stay in Košice is the Old Town (Staré Mesto) or its quieter edge. The historic core around Hlavná Street puts the cathedral, restaurants and bars on your doorstep; the ring just outside it — around Košice City Park and the railway station — is still walkable to everything but noticeably calmer and easier to reach by car. Residential districts such as Terasa or Sever suit longer, budget-minded stays rather than a first visit.

Košice is compact. Hlavná Street, the long pedestrian spine of the Old Town, runs north–south through the centre, and most sights sit on or just off it. That makes the choice less about “central or not” and more about how much noise, parking hassle and walking you are happy with. Here is an honest look at the main options.

Old Town core (Staré Mesto, on or just off Hlavná)

The postcard Košice: St Elisabeth Cathedral, the State Theatre, the Singing Fountain and a long run of cafés and terraces. You can walk everywhere and you will not need transport for sightseeing.

  • Best for: couples, short city breaks, first-time visitors, nightlife.
  • Watch out for: evening and weekend noise on the busiest streets, and big events held right on Hlavná — the Christmas market in December and the Peace Marathon start/finish zone in October.
  • Drivers: Hlavná itself is a pedestrian zone, and on-street parking in the central A1 tariff zone is the most expensive in the city and is charged Monday to Saturday around the clock. Check whether your accommodation includes parking before you book. See our parking guide.

The edge of the centre: City Park and the railway station

East of Hlavná, the streets around Košice City Park (Mestský park) and the main station are a five-to-ten-minute walk from the Old Town but feel more residential. The park gives you green space, playgrounds and running paths; the station gives you trains, the airport bus (line 23) and frequent city buses and trams.

  • Best for: families, drivers, business travellers, runners and anyone arriving by train or plane.
  • Watch out for: fewer bars and restaurants directly on your street; the station forecourt itself is busy, so a street set back from it is quieter.
  • Drivers: easier access than the pedestrian core, but most kerbside spaces are still in paid or resident-only zones.

Košice–Juh (south of the centre)

The district south of the Old Town includes the Steel Arena, home of HC Košice, and the Kasárne/Kulturpark cultural complex with the Steelpark science playground. It is handy if your trip revolves around an event at the arena, but it is a mix of busy roads, offices and housing rather than a place to wander in the evening.

Terasa (Košice–Západ)

Terasa is the popular name for the large housing estate in the Košice–Západ borough, built from the mid-1960s onwards west of the centre. You will find plenty of flats to rent, shopping and good tram and bus links, but few sights.

  • Best for: longer stays on a tighter budget, visiting friends or family who live there.
  • Watch out for: you will rely on public transport or a car to reach the Old Town, and the atmosphere is residential rather than historic.

Sever (north)

Košice–Sever is the city’s largest borough and its greenest edge, stretching towards the Čermeľ valley with the university Botanical Garden and the children’s railway. It is pleasant and quiet, but most of it is a bus or car ride from Hlavná.

  • Best for: nature lovers, walkers, quiet longer stays.
  • Watch out for: evenings out mean travelling back from the centre.

Should I stay near the airport?

Rarely. Košice Airport is on the southern edge of the city and the drive into the centre is short — about 8.5 km by road — so staying centrally and taking a Bolt, taxi or bus 23 is usually the better trade-off. Details in our airport guide.

Host tips for getting around

From our own experience of hosting guests (these are tips, not official figures):

  • Short Bolt rides around central Košice typically cost about €3 — the app shows the price before you confirm.
  • Shared e-scooters from Bolt and Antik SmartWay operate in the city; for adventurous guests they are a fun way to get home from the centre. Ride sober and follow the app’s parking rules.
